DodgeDraw (2010) is a venture into the merging of digital communications and physical interactions. An identical game space was installed in both Xuzhou and Chicago using a projector, a webcam, large sheets of paper hung from the wall, and a laptop computer. Each laptop connects to the other by way of a peer-to-peer video communication program, in this case Skype. During the openings, gallery and museum goers were invited to engage with each other by way of this life-size video projection relayed in real time. As a man steps in front of the paper in China, his image is projected onto the paper in the United States. He is handed an oil pastel and invited to trace the image of the American (who also holds a pastel) and has just walked into the game space in Chicago to be projected onto the paper in China. As each participant attempts to trace the other’s moving image, wildly animated life sized gestural drawings are produced.
